I just picked this up today -- the book is The Last Great Walk and why it matters today -- haven't started it, so here's what Amazon says:
In 1909, Edward Payson Weston walked from New York to San Francisco, covering around 40 miles a day and greeted by wildly cheering audiences in every city. The New York Times called it the "first bona-fide walk . . . across the American continent," and eagerly chronicled a journey in which Weston was beset by fatigue, mosquitos, vicious headwinds, and brutal heat. He was 70 years old.
In The Last Great Walk, journalist Wayne Curtis uses the framework of Weston’s fascinating and surprising story, and investigates exactly what we lost when we turned away from foot travel, and what we could potentially regain with America’s new embrace of pedestrianism. From how our brains and legs evolved to accommodate our ancient traveling needs to the way that American cities have been designed to cater to cars and discourage pedestrians, Curtis guides readers through an engaging, intelligent exploration of how something as simple as the way we get from one place to another continues to shape our health, our environment, and even our national identity.
Not walking, he argues, may be one of the most radical things humans have ever done.
And here's his route:

Yom Kippur
I follow Debbie Waserman Schultz on Twitter and have always really liked her. I love her friendship with Gabby Giffords. Anyway, Yom Kippur starts tonight and although I will not officially be observing it, it's always good to "reflect on our words and deeds." So here's Debbie's thoughts which I share:
“Tonight, families across America and around the world will gather for Kol Nidre, the most solemn and holy night in the Jewish calendar. On this Day of Atonement, we reflect on our words and deeds of the past year, and ask forgiveness from those we have wronged.
“During the Days of Awe, we return to our core values – teshuvah, tzedakah and tefillah – repentance, prayer and acts of loving kindness. As we look forward to the year ahead, we recommit ourselves to serving our community and to repairing the world. These are ideals that compel us to make the world a better place for each other, and bind us together as humanity, regardless of our individual faiths.
“From my family to yours, I wish all those observing Yom Kippur an easy fast – and may you and your loved ones may be inscribed for another year in the Book of Life.”

Loved this show
MMC debuted today in 1955. I was a total Mickey Mouse Club fan, and you can still see parts of the original shows on YouTube. Loved Spin and Marty serials and everything about it. Can still sing along with some of the songs.
Meeska-Mooska-Mouseketeer. Mouse Cartoon time now is here!

Happy Birthday, Michelle!
Happy Birthday to my old friend Michelle, who has been a loyal, loving, wonderful friend since 1967 when she was a sophisticated sophomore and Mary and I were dopey freshmen!
Pleasant Lunch
Someone who works at my Ohio client was in town and he came over for lunch, first stopping at Tal Bagels for sandwiches for us, which turned out to be a good choice since he told me he loves all deli food. He had an interesting NY experience in that this old man in front of him ordered chicken noodle soup and then said "but no noodles and no chicken, just the broth" -- the clerk asked the owner how much to charge and the owner quickly responded "same price, same price."
It's a weird NY thing that you can order all your food custom. Many times I've heard people order "well done" bagels or something on the side. When Barbara and I do our scrambled egg lunches, we do well done bacon and well done fries. I order my scrambled eggs "soft."
We talked about everything from the joy of totally thinly sliced meat to classic books we've read to White House intruders, fatherhood, etc. He told me a funny story about his six year old daughter. He had come home to find his wife having a serious discussion with their daughter who said to her mom, "Don't blame me, you're the one who raised me." And I said, "well, she's right."
I told him at the end that if this were our first date, I'd want a second, and he joked, "this might be a good time to tell you I'm married with two kids."
And yes, we both had turkey and swiss on a sesame bagel.

Beauty Makeover Day
I was in desperate need of some grooming -- got a mani-pedi and waxing and feel so much better and look so much better. Funny how my face feels after waxing -- without looking or feeling, I always just feel "cleaner" so it was nice to have all that done. Have a really pretty reddish-brown autumn-y color on fingers and toes.
