Fran and Mary's Roadtrip

Mary and Fran went to Catoctin Mountain Orchard, a big farm stand about an hour or so away. Here's Fran looking a little flushed in the heat. Love the sunflowers. This is in Maryland, right near Camp David. Don't know what they bought, but whatever it is I'm jealous. Have yet to have any great sweetcorn this summer!

Catoctin Mountain is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and when I looked it up in Wikepedia, I wonder if Mary and Fran were aware that...

Much of the mountain, being shattered rock, is home to large populations of timber rattlesnakes.

You would love this place - I think you need a summer trip to DC to go here. The berries were incredible, we bought jams and pickles and they have a wonderful bakery so the smell of cinnamon when you walk in is just wonderful! We're ready to go back. And we had a delicious Sunday dinner at the Shamrock Restaurant right down the road. We'll do a repeat trip if you come down!

You would appreciate a visit to the orchard, rattlers and all. There's nothing like fresh, luscious fruit. Nature's bounty indeed. I'm working my way through slurp-able peaches, sweet apricots, deep burgundy-colored cherries and giant blueberries. And you should have tasted the blackberries, which were the size of Texas. Oh and did I mention frozen custard (the real thing) and cranberry-apple cider? And the baked products-heavenly! And the blueberry preserves and the blackberry preserves.....ahhhhh and the food at Shamrock was great--the lemon layer cake was the best ever. C'mon down--the rattlers are waiting.
