I don't remember the details, but back in the mid-1970s when I first moved to New York, there was an initiative to plant trees on every block. I remember reading about how city-friendly trees were selected -- how there were a few kinds of trees that were hearty enough for city life.
I have often blessed in my mind whoever it was who came up and fought for that idea and saw it through. Now it is rare to see a street that is not tree-lined and it just so changes the whole feel of the city. Sometimes I try to imagine how bleak it would be without these trees.
So here's to trees and the people who fought for them:
