Costa Concordia
I found a May 2012 issue of Vanity Fair in a stack of books -- and found a very long article on the Costa Concordia -- that Italian cruise ship that hit the rocks. This is one of those minute-by-minute descriptions of what happened. At the time, I couldn't watch the films on the news. The whole thing of being trapped amidst panicky people scared me. I just didn't want to see it.
But reading is easier, but I do wonder -- just like I did during Hurricane Katrina or the USAir landing on the Hudson if I would be physically able to save myself. At the time I thought it would be easier to jump in the water, but today I was reading about those who died from hypothermia. There was one anecdote that reminded me of myself. Rescuers came up to one woman in the water and asked if she was ok. "I'm fine," she said and then added, "No, I'm not fine."
One haunting anecdote was about a bunch of people trapped where you had to pull yourself up to get out of an area full of water and this couple was able to struggle and do it, but behind them, still trapped was a couple with a baby with the water rising by the second. The mother handed the baby to the woman who had gotten out and asked her to take care of the baby. Like "save my baby because I'm going to die." The woman took the baby and then handed her back to the mother, saying that if they're going to die, they should die as a family. What?? I could never do that. I would definitely have taken the baby. As it turned out, the author said the parents and baby survived as far as he could determine.
The other thing that concerned me and my survival likelihood is that the author talked about people punching and shoving to get a seat in a lifeboat. I know I would not be that aggressive. One man tried to grab a lifejacket out of the hands of a woman. I think my tendency would be to let all the panicky screaming people shove their way into the first boats and then calmly be able to get in a boat. That might work, but then again, maybe the shovers and punchers are the ones who survive.
When I think about surviving, I have already surrendered to not trying to save anything. The author tells an anecdote about a woman clutching her laptop. I wouldn't do that -- and believe me, I've thought about it, but in my survival fantasies, I do want my wallet so that I will have money and credit cards once saved. I'm about 2/3rds of the way through, and there's lots of food for thought. Hopefully I'll never have to put into action any of this.
Just checked, and if you're interested, you can read this article on line at: http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2012/05/costa-concordia-sinking-scandal-italy

Problem Resolution (2 of 2)
Just heard from the History Book Club with the opposite type of explanation -- overly wordy, form letter like this:
We wish to confirm that our technical staff has resolved the issue. Please try again and let us know if you have any more technical difficulties.
This is a one-size fits all and goes on to tell me to un-bookmark, un-favorite, delete all cookies and temporary files, restart my browser blah blah blah which has nothing to do with my original problem of my email/username already being "taken."
So I ignored the instructions, went back to the site, and it is, in fact, fixed so I'm getting four great books for $4, but of course, with tax, shipping and handling, the total comes out to $17.11.
However, it's solved for now.

Problem Resolution (1 of 2)
Just heard from the reading glasses place. I have to say I really like the answer which is:
That was a mistake on both the part of our warehouse AND myself as I was the person who processed your order. We simply forgot to enclose the case.
Debby expects another batch of these rap color cases to arrive today or tomorrow some time. I’ll send it to you as soon as it arrives.
Sorry about that!

I like it because it's clearly from a human being. I like it because it's personal to me, not a form letter. I like it because they admit they made a mistake. I like it because I feel as if I am being told the truth. So I will now fully endorse: Debby Burk Opticals at http://www.debspecs.com/ If you want/need reading glasses, especially fun ones, this is the place, and it's cheaper than the drug store. Of course, I also like it because I'm getting my free glasses case!

Two Birthday Day Complaints
This has nothing to do with my birthday other than I don't think I should be irritated unduly on my birthday.
Two complaints.
First is with the History Book Club. I had belonged for years and then decided to give it a rest. I had long fulfilled the requirements (only two books to buy during the first12-month period), but I canceled the membership. Recently I've been offered a chance to come back and the offers are getting better. Yesterday I got an offer to rejoin and get four books for a dollar each.
Ok, I thought. I'll do that. I pick out my four books, and I have to say at a dollar each, it is a good buy since one of them was this big coffee table book of photographs. I am filling in the form to re-join, get it all filled in and press submit and it comes back and tells me that my email address (also my "user name") is already taken. I need to use a different email address.
I write them:
I am trying to re-join. I only use one email address and the system is telling me this is already taken. Yes, it's taken by me. I am not going to do a unique email address just for this. If you can override the system, I'll rejoin.
This doesn't seem that tough a problem. I have now gotten three, count 'em THREE, auto-responses... one to say they got it, one to say they're working on it, and one to say they haven't yet solved it. Really? Why is this so difficult?
Second is with this company where I buy reading glasses. I have to say I have always liked this company. I am terribly hard on reading glasses -- I throw them in my purse, put them through the washer, sit on them, step on them, swing them around, etc. There was an "October special" -- which meant if you order $39.95 or more, you get this free glasses case which I liked. I am down to two pair (and I like having them all over and having back ups) so I placed an order which totaled just over $50. Got the order today and they were sold out of one pair which put my total BELOW the required amount for the bonus gift so I didn't get. I have just now emailed them saying this is not right; I fulfilled my end of the deal and I should have been contacted to do a substitute. We'll see.

Birthday Lunch Feast
I didn't make it in time for my planned Birthday Waffle Brunch, but I did substitute a Birthday Chinese Lunch Feast in its place. Here goes:
There is a certain organizational obsessiveness I've found with Asian restaurants, including this one of twisting the handles of the inner shopping bag so nothing can fall out.
First course: Egg Drop Soup with a pack of crispy noodles. My acai-blueberry-pomegranate vitamin water to drink and magazines to read.
Next course: Pot Stickers! Or pork dumplings, dipped in hot mustard and duck sauce.
Main Course: Sesame Chicken and brown rice.
Dessert: My birthday fortune cookie.
Birthday at 12:15
Here's a birthday cake from Amy who I was with last week in Daytona Beach. It would be nice to be back there, without business obligations of course!
Birthday @ 10:40 am
Ok, life isn't going as planned. My phone keeps ringing, keeping me from my birthday brunch. I hate when work interferes with my life. So now I'm thinking of Chinese lunch instead of waffle brunch... my mouth is watering for pot stickers (pork dumplings.) Stand by.
In the meantime, Barbara sent me these two cakes with the message: Please post these two pictures on your blog... I'm sure I am not alone among your friends who wants you to enjoy your own cake, too!
